D-16/Megatron voice ranking in different languages. Mostly based on how they sound. Basically, I rate them based on how well I think they fit the character. I am biased towards the languages I know (danish, norwegian, english, some german and a tiny bit of spanish) so translation accuracy and creativity affects those placements. If a dub I rank high or low has a terrible or good translation respectively, keep in mind that I'll likely miss that as someone who doesn't understand the language. I also don't care about lip-syncing since some languages are obviously going to have a hard time matching stuff up. I also believe that this isn't about imitating Brian Tyree Henry as much as possible. For example, I heavily disliked the danish dub at first until I got used to the voice and realised that it still conveyed D-16's emotions and development. Not as well as other dubs at all, mind you, but not as bad as I initially felt. I also know that dubs in languages far from any language I understand will be more difficult to rate. I'll try my best to take my biases into account but there is 0 way I can rate those completely fairly. I also appreciate when they make the effort to dub over the non-speaking sounds. Especially his heavy breathing before dropping Orion sounds quite off if the dub actor's voice doesn't fit. (which it usually doesn't) Extra bonus points if they dub over D-16 grunting as he stomps on his badge in the cave. The placements are all heavily malleable and I simply do this for fun. English (perfection) German (nearly perfect line delivery. genuinely incredible how they managed to stay so true to D-16's voice and delivery while maintaining the meaning) Swedish (OH MY FUCKING GOD. They actually took an incredibly good creative liberty with the "I'm done saving you" line. Instead of translating i directly, which leads to the drawn out "Jeg er ferdig med å redde deg" which is still good but pales in comparison to THE GLORIOUS "Du får rädda dig själv". That translates to something like "You'll have to save yourself" but when it's phrased that way it's meant in an incredibly frustrated and exhasperated way. D-16 truly sounds DONE. This is a much more authentic translation and it would have worked wonderfully in the Norwegian dub! It'd mean practically the same thing and it would 100% have worked better. Holy fucking shit that is good. As a danish and norwegian person I know I am betraying my people but I have to be honest. THIS is what good dubbing looks like. Adapting the lines for maximum impact! I think I'll even watch it all the way through now to check if they avoided goofily translated terms.) PHENOMENAL DUBS ABOVE Norwegian (D-16 has the right vibe and his sense of desparation is conveyed super well. There's just something about him here I really enjoy. Probably cause' this is a language i know by heart. SUPER biased here. The in-universe terms are also quite well-translated) Dutch (so, dutch is such a mindfuck for me to listen to because it sounds EXACTLY like an unholy lovechild between danish, german and english so my brain is convinced that I'm supposed to understand everything they say. I understand some of it, though. All in all, this is an EXCELLENT dub. D-16 sounds quite friendly here but he becomes sufficiently ominous as the story goes on.) Latin American dub WITHOUT the "star talents" (D-16 sounds older here but the actor makes it work. I quite like the unreleased performance. I've chosen to ignore the "star talent" dub for various reasons) GREAT DUBS ABOVE Bulgarian (earlier in the movie D-16 sounds a bit squeaky but every single line just lands during the scenes up to D-16 drops Orion and when they were fighting in the cave I genuinely got convinced. There's such a genuine delivery here and I really like it.) Japanese (enjoyable. obviously I have to factor in the fact that voice acting and line delivery clearly works differently in japanese than I'm used to. I still like it for what it is and feel like it does a good job. Take this particular placement with a grain of salt) Danish (honestly i REALLY disliked this one at first, like with most other danish dubs. Then I somehow changed my mind. The actor's voice doesn't really fit but the acting isn't half bad. In reality it's here because on a more objective level, it likely isn't better than the dubs above.) French (the transition to Megatron is quite good in my opinion but it feels lacking in a sense) GOOD DUBS ABOVE South Korean (I generally like D-16's voice here) European Portuguese (it's just alright) Croatian (I feel like the voice is pretty close to nailing D-16 as a character. Despite having a more soft spoken and... mature (?) voice it adds a dimension to the character that I really like. This would rank higher if some of the more impactful lines were delivered better.) Hungarian (He sounds like a nervous wreck and that definitely makes D-16 feel different as someone who knows zero hungarian. Doesn't fit him at all but I still like it though) European Spanish (something is off here. it just doesn't feel like d-16 at all) FROM HERE ON OUT THEY FEEL LIKE D-16 OR ARE WELL-ACTED ENOUGH FOR ME TO LOOK PAST IT Slovenian (the acting doesn't feel completely flat.) Polish (meh) Romanian (bland) Slovakian (I just don't like it very much) Finnish (he just sounds like he's reading the script aloud. The language is fascinating. This dub is not.)
